Description

An unpretentious bar and lounge with an English flair, Shady's is a place to chillax while sampling a few pints of Bass or Guinness, shoot some billiards, watch cult movies on the TVs, or converse with your fellow urbanites. It's got a living room-type feel with a fireplace stocked with candles and some of the most comfortable black leather chairs we've ever sat on. Owned by Brad Henrich (the cat behind Scottsdale's TT Roadhouse), it also has one of the most fly jukeboxes in the Valley, stocked with a cool cross-section of CDs ranging from Al Green and Richard Cheese to The Smiths, and others.

    Justin Vargo's Roadkill

Justin Vargo at Shady's in Phoenix has a killer "house birthday shot," that breathes German liqueur. What does German booze and roadkill have in common? Uh, we had to ask (dun, dun, dun). Name: Road... More »

  • 2012 | Best Jukebox

Ask any self-respecting hipster what Phoenix bar has the best jukebox in town and you're asking for an argument. Though we're certainly not immune to the charms of other establishments, it's hard to deny the nearly universal appeal of the Shady's box. Featuring soul, vintage alternative, punk, mod, Brit pop, and local gems from Phoenix's past, the Shady's juke not only features a little of everything, but the selections representing each genre are top-notch. So let the argument rage on... More »

  • 2011 | Best Neighborhood Bar, Central Phoenix

Celebrating its sixth anniversary, Shady's is the not-to-be-missed neighborhood bar in Central Phoenix. With its dark, retro interior, friendly bartenders, and amazing jukebox, Shady's has become a staple for service-industry employees and mature hipsters who like to throw back a few after a long day. Not only does the bar offer custom cocktails (try the signature Drink to Forget, a boozy coffee concoction), it also has been dabbling in the craft-beer scene. From such on-tap beers as Odell's... • 2008 | Best Neighborhood Bar, Central Phoenix

Who'd have thought a tiny bar with a sign that gives a nod to '80s and ska scenesters would be such a friendly, welcoming spot? Usually, a bar that dips its toe in the too-cool pool will pack an attitudinal wallop. Instead, Shady's '60s interior is retro and relaxed. Pick a drink, any drink, and their engaging bartenders will remember it the next time you visit, even if it's months later. How do they do it? We don't know, but we're sure they've harnessed some of that mojo to stock a cool... More »

  • 2007 | BEST JUKEBOX

The jukebox inside this central Phoenix neighborhood bar is an absolute gem. Aside from the fantastic selection, it's one of the few "real" jukes left in our favorite dimly lit haunts. So many bars have gone the way of the Internet jukebox. Sure, it's kind cool to be able to play literally anything, but it's also boring -- we've got iTunes on our laptops. Part of the fun of a bar jukebox is being forced to hunt for a song, and, often, you remember songs you haven't listened to for years.... More »

  • 2005 | BEST NEIGHBORHOOD BAR, CENTRAL PHOENIX

This newcomer has just the right features to keep us coming back. First of all, Shady's is no townie hangout. Its cool, understated coziness -- a compact bar, black upholstered banquettes and booths, a single pool table -- attracts a crowd that's young, good-looking, and interested in more than simply getting hammered. There's also a killer jukebox stocked with classic alt-rock, punk and ska (no surprise, considering that Shady's older sister is Scottsdale's TT Roadhouse, whose own jukebox... More »
