Shabu Pub's signature hot pot -- in which slices of thinly sliced meats are quickly cooked in hot broth -- isn't quite as Japanese as the restaurant claims. It's a blend of Japanese and Chinese hot pots, with spicy miso and Mongolian broths available and a choice of meats that ranges from traditional beef to heretical lamb and seafood. The restaurant is packed with big families, many of whom are opting for the all-you-can-eat option, which includes giant bowls of vegetables and loops of half-cooked udon noodles. And if the raw beef and lamb is sliced so thin that it tends to disintegrate, the rhythm of the DIY meal makes it a pleasant night out.
