Description

This tiny bistro defines itself as a neighborhood restaurant, albeit one for the Russian Hill residents who most appreciate white tablecloths and milk-glass chandeliers. Alexander Alioto - yeah, he's from S.F.'s politic-and-food-focused clan - aims at doing right by the classics. Dishes like housemade fettuccine carbonara and duck breast with sweet-sour braised cabbage demonstrate the chef's European training, and his menu is peppered with all the names of the local producers he places orders with. While the inexperienced service can be off-putting, Alexander's technique is sure. And his house-made ricotta backs the restaurant's brightest stars. Drizzled with honey, it's the restaurant's best dessert; a ricotta-stuffed raviolo uovo crowned with an egg yolk and served with truffled brown butter is an opulent flight of fancy.
