Leave it to chef Johnny Chu to open downtown's first sake bar. Like Fate, his former eatery, Sens has an urban-globetrotter aesthetic, although it's more homey, with shareable small plates like dumplings and hotpots and nibbles meant to be dunked in dipping sauces. From juicy soup gyoza to smoky, tender fish grilled in a banana leaf, the food is simple but high-impact.

This is hands down one of the top places to eat in Phoenix. Even the once expected-to-be drivel that is tofu is delicious and crispy, as far as texture and melding with the sauces. The only thing I developed any remote disdain for was the white ginger fish, because it lacked even a memory of flavor. Everything else on the menu will deck you with spice and flavor that is worthy of the most loved Sultan, the highest regarded President, the most pure of vegetarian monks, the - well, you get the point. I love this restaurant, and you cannot go wrong - especially if you love spice.
I had an excellent dining experience here. The staff was so friendly and the food was just fabulous.
There are plenty of delish cocktails we could recommend at Sens, Johnny Chu's always-fabulous Asian tapas hot spot, and we're delighted that they've finally built a bigger bar to accommodate our cravings. But if you're looking for a new twist on an old favorite, we humbly suggest the Hot and Dirty. It's got all the dirty martini basics -- olive juice, vodka, ice, and a big, fat olive -- but it's also got a nifty lil' addition that will blow your mind. Namely, shochu, which is... More »
Downtown Phoenix's nightlife is picking up momentum. Want proof? Check out Sens, chef Johnny Chu's hip, modern Asian tapas spot, where you can stop by for a snack or a full meal until midnight -- and until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Chu's small-plates menu is a celebration of pan-Asian flavors, from Japanese-style grilled shrimp and red Thai curry chicken wings to authentic Chinese soup gyoza, filled with pork and savory broth. Tangy beef carpaccio, marinated in lime juice and... More »
