Description

With its Spanglish name and Small World approach to Mexican cookery -- the menu spans nearly every Mexican region, so patrons can craft a meal of Oaxacan moles, Michoacan pork and Jaliscan shrimp saturated with cream -- Senor Moose is likely to give purists pause. But if eaters are capable of stemming their snobbery, they're bound to find Mexican food as good as any so far from the border. The cozy dining room has limited seating, so most guests are forced to wait for a table, absorbing the aroma of freshly fried corn. Senor Moose makes terrific tortillas, corn chips and a deconstructed elotes that's a wonderful start to any meal. Entrees are equally good, especially when paired with a house margarita.

  • 2011 | Best Mexican Restaurant

For the vast majority of Americans, "Mexican food" means a bowl of tortilla chips with salsa, some sort of meat wrapped in a cheese-slathered tortilla, and a soggy serving of refried beans and yellow rice. At first blush, a restaurant with a goofy, gringo-friendly name like Senor Moose might seem to offer this sort of insipid faux-Mex fare. In truth, though, the colorful and cozy Ballard restaurant specializes in authentic comida tipica, traditional dishes from south of the border. The vast... More »

  • 2011 | Best Place to Eat Alone

You want good food; you just don't want to be seen eating it. That's the conundrum faced by the solo diner, and the problem solved by Senor Moose Cafe. Ballard's best comida tipica (real Mexican food) can be had in its un-chic dining room, the back bar (El Milagro), or, for those without a dance partner, on a stool facing the open-air, diner-style kitchen. Ashamed to be alone Don't worry: Moose is busy enough most nights that if you take your carne de puerco at the counter, you'll just look... More »

Best hangover food in Seattle. Expect long lines. The maduros with cream are delicious. Make sure you go home afterwards to take a nap and change clothes. The kitchen is an outside one so you'll bring home the best take-out: the delightful aromas of their food!
