Description

The local outpost of a Memphis-based chain, Sekisui is the most cosmopolitan of South Grand's ethnic restaurants. Chef Kenji Nemoto's selection of nigiri sushi and sashimi is broad - though dependent on what's available each day - with popular favorites like tuna, salmon and unagi as well as sea urchin, the higher grades of tuna and other exotic fare. Traditional rolls are very good, while Americanzed rolls will appeal to relative newcomers to sushi. Not in the mood for raw fish? The menu offers an extensive selection of dishes featuring cooked seafood, vegetables and tofu, not to mention excellent soups.

    Star Fish

"How the hell do you review sushi?" a dozen people have asked me since last week. It's a valid question: When you're talking about a cuisine focused entirely on white rice and raw fish, it's not at as if there are sauces to botch up or... More »

Sekisui is the best kind of chain restaurant -- the kind that doesn't look, feel, taste or act like part of a chain. That's partly because, as far as St. Louis is concerned, it's one-of-a-kind: While the Sekisui franchise began a few years back in Memphis, where a handful of outposts now operate under the name, the South Grand Sekisui is St. Louis' one and only. Sekisui's expansion to Gateway country two years back wasn't just a bottom line-bloating business move, but also a homecoming of... More »

  • 2003 | Best Sushi

A sad fact about sushi restaurants: Even when the fish is fantastic, the surroundings often feel icky. There's almost always a weird, hushed quality to the room -- kind of like how people muffle their speech and behavior in a bookstore even though it's not a library, it's a bookstore. Restaurants are meant to be boisterous, social, outward experiences, but for some reason people fear acting as such around raw fish. Except at Sekisui, one of St. Louis' newest -- and now Best -- sushi outpost.... More »
