There's hardly a destination restaurant in town that doesn't feature a Sebastian Joe's handmade ice-cream choice on its dessert menu. But even the most jaded tablehopper gets dazzled at the source. Danza di Limone is ethereal lemon ice cream with almond slivers. Pavarotti is an inspired combination of caramel, banana, and chocolate chip. Chocolate amaretto, raspberry chocolate chip, passionfruit sorbet: Each flavor at Sebastian Joe's reflects ambition and sophistication, and each cone is a frozen swoon. There's also a full coffee bar, a counter full of baked goods, and a menu offering shakes, floats, waffle cones--in short, everything.
Don't expect to get a buzz from Surly Bender ice cream. Sebastian Joe's debuted the flavor last spring, and the company cooks off the alcohol right at the start. Co-owner Mike Pellizzer said the fl... More »
Sebastian Joe's Ice Cream Cafe 1007 Franklin Ave W., 612.870.0065 In a world where the remarkable often goes unremarked, where history flits through with as much moment as a spider slipping under a sill, where unknowing and unseeing are too... More »
This has been my favorite ice cream place for at least 15 years. The best flavors of ice cream in the Twin Cities. I recommend the Pavarotti, Oreo, Raspberry Chocolate Chip, Key Lime, or Mango. Not the best waffle cones, but the ice cream makes up for it. And they're open late! Bonus.
The Twin Cities is blessed with more amazing ice cream shops than anyone not from these cold parts would think possible: Izzy's, Crema Café/Sonny's, Pumphouse Creamery, and Grand Ole Creamery. But this year, plaudits go to Sebastian Joe's for honoring our region's unique snow-melt-freeze-thaw-split-the-blacktop cycle. Nicollet Avenue Pot Hole, a flavor just one year old, is rich chocolate ice cream filled with fudge, truffles, chunks of Heath bar, and sea salt--a meld of... More »
Sebastian Joe's is the perfect place to go for ice cream and sympathy. They understand that one's evening companions might have aged out of late-night ice cream runs, and so they also offer coffee shop treats by the dozen. They know subzero weather can make a strong case against a treat that's guaranteed to lower your body temperature, so they sweeten the deal by offering discounts in January and February after the thermometer drops below 30 degrees. They even know that the perfect spumoni... More »
From the basic (chocolate) to the creative (Pavarotti--caramel, banana, chocolate chip) to the strange (roasted garlic chocolate chip), Sebastian Joe's is your can't-miss choice for freshly made ice cream. With about 20 assorted flavors offered each day--they vary seemingly according to whim--there's always a new delight for your sweet tooth, whether it's a white licorice shake ($3.60), a Chocolate Cha Cha sundae (chocolate ice cream, peanut-butter topping, mixed nuts, and whipped cream for... The stark lighting at Sebastian Joe's will illuminate your response--recalcitrant, guilt-inducing, whatever the situation inspires. Once the exchange is over, the atmosphere will remind you what's really important. Little girls in patent leather shoes, launched into glee by sprinkles. Sebastian Joe's homemade fudge sauce melting on your tongue. Each spoonful provides perspective: life offers many pleasures that don't snore beside you. After devouring a banana split, wave goodbye. Walk with... More »
