Description

This venerable (since 1938) San Francisco eatery off Union Square has been thoughtfully refurbished (vintage tile floors, real antiques, mellow lighting) and is once again an excellent place for classic American breakfasts (served until 3 p.m.) and simple lunches and dinners. The "world-famous Swedish pancakes" - 18 thin dollhouse-size cakes - are served with real maple syrup.

    Sears, which turns 62 this year, is famous for a number of things -- its preserved-in-aspic coffee shop milieu, its (apocryphal?) Cadillac waiting room -- but mostly it's famous for its tiny, light-as-air Swedish pancakes. We can take pancakes or leave 'em, but we love our waffles.
