Description

The mall is not for shopping; rather, it's a tiny oasis in the urban desert surrounded by eateries and City of Scottsdale facilities (including City Hall and the terrific Civic Center Library) and replete with perennial flowers and greenery, paths for strolling, gurgling fountains, sculptural works and one of the best viewing angles of Camelback Mountain -- especially in the half-hour before dusk. The adjoining Scottsdale Center for the Arts is a bastion of the performing and visual arts, featuring two stages (capacities: 838 and 130) and five galleries. Next to that is the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by Will Bruder of Burton Barr Central Library fame.

  • 2011 | Best Public Art as Tourist Attraction

Who doesn't have a picture of themselves in front of the Love sculpture on the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall Visitors to Scottsdale flock to the sculpture because it is one of only a handful of them in the country. It is large and, unlike most pieces of art, you can touch it and climb on it. This makes for a perfect picture-taking opportunity. We can't wait to see your Valentines. More »

  • 2008 | Best Grass

Talk about a cheap high at taxpayers' expense -- thankfully. On a spring afternoon, dozens of people are picnicking, frolicking, reading, text-messaging, and simply lying on the lush, green grass supplied to citizens by the City of Scottsdale. This is no mesa (no Mesa, either), but instead, a lovely oasis of gentle slopes, inviting shade trees, and the constant sweet splash of a big fountain not far away. Business types in ties and high heels are not immune from the charms of this... More »

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: The can is the ultimate in beer technology. Not only does aluminum completely keep out sunlight and oxygen -- beer’s mortal enemies -- but it’s also easier to ship and store, better for bringing on a h... More »

    Night Moves

This isn't rocket science. Taking a nighttime run is much more bearable (come summer, anyway) than sunlit jogging. But we'd argue that it makes for more fun, too. You can wear that electric cowboy outfit normally reserved for Halloween and people ... More »

Foul body odor and greasy hair aside, there’s something to be said for urban hippies. Honestly, we’re a little jealous of their ability to sit in a sunny, grassy park on a quintessential Arizona Sunday and play guitar on a hillside for several hou... More »

This is no mesa (no Mesa, either), but instead, a lovely oasis of gentle slopes, inviting shade trees, and the constant sweet splash of a big fountain not far away. Business types in ties and high heels are not immune from the charms of this space, and kids . . . well, forget it. They never seem to want to leave, particularly when the splash fountain's going. Go figure.
