Walzwerk sister restaurant Schmidt's offers a refined take on traditional German cuisine. The interior is reminiscent of a beer hall with white walls, but the vibe is cool, elegant, and minimal. The deli menu is long on sausages, cured meats, and cabbage, but the preparations tend to be subtle, rich yet not overbearingly heavy, and fresh-tasting. The leberkase, a terrine of pork and veal, with fried egg and roasted onions, and the pea pancakes with cured salmon are prime examples. Although service can be spotty at this Mission District restaurant, the kitchen is consistent.
