Well into its second decade, the Schlafly Tap Room has been given a menu overhaul courtesy of popular local chef Andy White. The new dishes strike a balance between Schlafly's brewpub roots and White's contemporary-bistro background. Sandwiches include a fantastic ham and fried-egg concoction and a tasty burger. Don't worry, long-time Tap Room fans: Most of the classic dishes remain, including the warm, soft pretzels with white-cheddar dip, the brats and, of course, the fish and chips. Local music lovers and nightclub dwellers also know the Tap Room as a thriving event space and a great place to catch free live music from some of the area's best bands and musicians. They also hosts the occasional up-and-coming touring acts, so watch the schedule.
Saturday-morning garage-sale hunting is always great fun. Saturday-morning garage-sale hunting followed by a pig roast is awesome. On Saturday, May 25, Schlafly Tap Room (2100 Locust Street; 314-241-... More »

title="Homespun: Prairie Rehab, Weights & MeasuresThe fateful Craigslist ad that brought songwriter and guitarist Lacie Mangels into the company of ex-Linemen Scott Swartz (guitar), Greg Lamb (bass) and John Baldus (drums) continues to pay dividends. After the appropriately titled Philology was... More »
Welcome to the weekend! I'm operating from a strategic satellite location out of town at the moment, so I can't tell if it's spring in St. Louis yet. Regardless, I am bummed to be missing out on some ... More »
Wine and cheese. Sake and sushi. Champagne and caviar. Beer and...cupcakes? Yeah, we're not so sure about that one, but Schlafly seems to think it works. The Schlafly Tap Room (2100 Locust Street; 31... More »
On Friday and Saturday, March 8-9, the Schlafly Tap Room (2100 Locust Street; 314-241-2337) celebrated its annual Stout and Oyster Festival, flying in 30,000 live oysters from both coasts, along with ... More »
In the course of our research, we hit every brewpub in town and can declare authoritatively that the Tap Room is still king. Let's start with the beer selection, which averages a dozen Schlafly beers, plus two cask beers -- the expected standards and seasonals you know and love, plus a host of small batches available only at the Tap Room. Schlafly has been steadily improving its beers and, as the St. Louis craft beer market continues to improve, expand and mature, it has become a bit... More »
Let's face it, nobody really wants to picture the burly dudes named Bimbo and Bubba peeling shrimp in the back of a restaurant kitchen. But stand six knobby-knuckled oyster shuckers in the middle of a restaurant and let 'em go to town? Wicked! Schlafly Tap Room owners Tom Schlafly and Dan Kopman have been hosting that kind of shindig, officially known as the Schlafly Stout & Oyster Festival, for some time now. Every year the feast gets bigger -- north of 25,000 oysters this past... More »
The indecisive shouldn't visit Schlafly Tap Room. What beer do you want? Where to start? Of course, you can always opt for one of Schlafly's tried-and-true varieties: pale ale, hefeweizen, pilsner. But you have to consider the seasonal brews, too, such as Kaldi's Coffee Stout in the fall or Scotch Ale in the winter. Miss them now and you'll have to wait the better part of a year for another chance. Then again, Schlafly's ever-expanding selections include small-batch beers available on draft... More »
Astrological. Mayan. Chinese. Jewish. Roman. Whatever calendar you follow, tear it up and embrace Schlafly's calendar of seasonal beers. The highest of this calendar's High Holy Days falls in late January, when we devotees shake off our wind-chilled stupor and, as greedy as kids beneath the Christmas tree, rush to purchase the year's first Scotch Ale--then, quickly, the year's second and third. Schlafly Scotch Ale has the body to stand up to hearty cold-weather fare, and its malty... More »
This year, in this category, the Schlafly Tap Room kicked its own ass. Seriously: We were all set to write about Schlafly's Oyster & Stout Festival, the late-March fete that allows the landlocked to eat bivalves till we're stupid. Then July rolled around, and with it came Mussel Mania. Pshaw, we thought crankily. Takes a lot more than a plate o' mussels to inspire mania. But we showed up at the Tap Room anyhow. A friend put a beer in our hand. Then we approached the mussels table and went... More »
The kind still with the potato skin on 'em, fried crisp but not too much, so the soft velvety white on the inside is still supple to the touch, still steaming. Oh, sweet starch. A touch of salt, uh-huh. Malt vinegar sprinkled over the pile, just enough spicy ketchup to provide a balanced, salty-sweet tension. It's a miracle what potatoes, oil and accoutrements can accomplish when they cooperate. You can order a basket of fries, or you can get them as part of the fish-and-chips plate (which... More »
Not fried cod, not tuna salad, not even beer-battered tilapia. If you want to sink your teeth into the ultimate fish sandwich in St. Louis, then it has got to be the one at the Schlafly Tap Room. Theirs is a charred six-ounce fillet of genuine wild salmon, draped in a flavorful pesto mayo, crowned with cool and creamy avocado slices and served on a soft, scrumptious bun. You can add bacon to the mix if you like, but we don't. Price: an eminently modest $8.95. More »
You're thirsty. A beer would taste good right about now. Why not pop into the St. Louis Brewery and Tap Room and see what they have to tempt you? Hey, what's this crazy word? Hefeweizen? If it's half as much fun to drink as it is to say, you'll have hit the jackpot. The bartender draws the luxurious, cloudy golden liquid from the tap. Just before he hands you the pint, he reaches down and plops a slice of lemon on the edge of the glass. What's going on? Did I accidentally order iced... More »
