Opened the year after the 1906 earthquake, the Savoy Tivoli has seen a lot of changing faces over the past century -- and if you spend enough time in this old bohemian bar, you may well see some changing faces yourself. In the late afternoons and evenings, the Savoy Tivoli is a mellow, airy place in which to sip a cocktail while listening to classic bebop on the stereo and enjoying the artsy retro decor (e.g., colorful glass lanterns, sculptural lamps, jazz collages). As night falls, however, the music switches to contemporary pop as the crowd swells with young partiers looking to quaff pints, shoot pool, or maybe even dance under the disco ball that hangs in the small back room. Of course, the North Beach party crowd probably doesn't appreciate the bar's historical relevance -- but the Savoy Tivoli will likely outlive them anyway.
