Description

This inexpensive kosher/vegetarian restaurant boasts a mutipage menu beginning with dozens of breakfast items and continuing into soups, salads, sandwiches, smoothies, seafoods, and a global hodgepodge of dishes deemed Chinese, Cuban, Mexican, and so forth. Like all ethnically overambitious restaurants, Sara's is the jack of all foods, ace of none, but at these prices -- all dishes cost less than $10 -- jacks ain't bad. Most of the winning hands come from Middle Eastern selections and traditional Jewish foods. Blintzes are large, soft crêpes rolled around sweetened cheese vibrantly spiked with vanilla; potato knishes are the old-fashioned, dome-shaped variety with crusty pastry covering smooth, onion-flecked potato purée. Kasha knishes are a knockout too, as are potato pierogi (dumplings) -- boiled or fried, dappled with fried onions, and drizzled with choice of applesauce or sour cream. The "burgerito" is the tastiest veggie burger in town -- a giant falafel plumped into a generous challah bun and smothered with tachina (tahini) sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, a smidgeon of sauerkraut, "and hot sauce, if you like." There are misses here too - such as the "saraloin steak," which is reminiscent of a Swanson Salisbury steak TV dinner -- but order wisely and be rewarded. The décor? Don't ask.
