Description

One of the most interesting of local restaurants to watch, Sapor was born when two Lucia's alumnae, chef Tanya Siebenaler and manager and wine fan Julie Steenerson, set out on their own into the then-underpopulated far reaches of Minneapolis's Warehouse District. Well, the far reaches of the Warehouse District remain underpopulated (giving Sapor a parking lot and much after-6:00 p.m. street parking) and it has nothing to do with chef Siebenaler's adventurous but forthright global cooking. Sapor is a first-date paradise, as it's the only place in town where one half of a couple can get a nice steak and mashed potatoes and the other can score a great vegetarian Indian plate centered on vegetable turnovers wrapped in lush homemade pastry. The bar is notable, too for its Monday-Saturday 5-7pm happy hour. Count on a half-dozen little plates of chef-fanciful creations priced at $2 to $4, things like grilled green beans in a Gorgonzola zabaglione.

  • 2006 | BEST VEGETARIAN-FRIENDLY RESTAURANT

It's not so much that Sapor is a vegetarian restaurant, or even a fish- and chicken-serving one with a veggie aesthetic. It's that Sapor does to meatless entrees what it does to all of them: Chef Tanya Siebenaler and manager and wine fan Julie Steenerson seem to turn everything they put on a plate or into a glass several degrees off any route yet traveled, making their vegetarian specials and seasonally replaced menu items really, truly new--and friendly. As of this writing, there's a... More »

  • 2005 | BEST RESTAURANT FOR ROMANCE

What is love? Is it the ability to look past a surface, and see the true wonder and beauty inside? Is it an appreciation of real thoughtfulness, serenity, and clarity of vision? Is it when you want to focus on your date, and not on the raucous razzmatazz and racket around you? If you have answered yes to these questions, report immediately to Sapor, the most under-appreciated restaurant in Minneapolis. Once there you will find the elegant, bold cooking of Tanya Siebenaler (her miso-glazed... More »

  • 2004 | BEST RESTAURANT FOR APPETIZERS

They've made an art form and passion of appetizers over at Sapor, just check out their One Bite, Two Bite menu for proof. That's where you'll find a dozen snacks priced to move--the latest one had crispy wasabi potato cakes with roasted peanuts for $2.50, sausage-stuffed olive poppers for $2.75, an artichoke served with zippy house aioli for $2.25, plum-ancho barbecue ribs for $3, and jerk chicken with pineapple-mango sauce for $3. Throw those savory fellows on the table with a glass of the... More »

  • 2002 | BEST SERVICE AT A RESTAURANT

There are two ways restaurants create great service: by constant training, or by caring very, very deeply. Sapor is of the latter variety: Owners Tanya Siebenaler (chef) and Julie Steenerson (manager) go nuts with caring about the customers. Seriously. A visit with a friend with deathly legume allergies had the entire restaurant on alert, included a special batch of baked-just-for-us cookies, and never made us feel like chumps in the process. Siebenaler understands food science and... More »

  • 2001 | BEST RESTAURANT FOR A FIRST DATE

Pigeonholes, snap dismissals, and the whiff of the uncool: These are all things you want to avoid on those all-important first dates. Thank heaven, then, for the new Warehouse District restaurant Sapor. The wide-ranging wine list lets you pick between showing off your internationalism and taking solace in the familiar. The stylish room with the flattering lighting makes everyone look good. And the menu? The menu is a first-date dream, running the gamut from sophisticated takes on... More »
