SF Weekly's Description
The San Francisco branch of a Manhattan-based Mexican restaurant empire offers fancy Mexican food, inspired by Acapulco: It's elegant food fit for a deluxe seaside resort. Rather than burritos and hot sauce, Maya offers starters such as a guacamole sampler, chiles rellenos, and salmon ceviche, and entrées that include seafood dishes such as halibut Totec (pan-roasted halibut with black and white sesame seeds, purple mashed potatoes, spicy lobster broth, scallops, frisée salad, and chive oil), and meat dishes like tampiquena (grilled butterflied filet mignon with rajas potato gratin, a mole cheese enchilada with guacamole, and cilantro oil).

Okay, if you are like me and like local flavors and real ethnic authenticity, this place is a must. Don't let the appearance fool you, yes it looks like a corner mart, but inside awaits a culinary concord waiting to take you to India. I suggest the sev purri, the pakooras and samosas are a good start, and a deluxe meal with raita, pickled lime, dal, rice, choice of bread and two entrees will set you back a wopping $6 bucks. The lassi's are also yummy for a drink. Also ask about the masala dosa if available. ** Note: For or against you decide. They only serve vegetarian food, but I have never gone away hungry.

pork. belly. tacos. Go!
Chevy's prices, but infinitely better food. It's also great for big dinner groups.
Try the chicken mole burrito without salsa. It's really yum.
