SF Weekly's Description
After a Telegraph Hill landslide forced the closure of its original Broadway location, S.F.'s favorite Afghan restaurant reopened near Russian Hill on upper Van Ness. The name changed slightly, but the food is just as good. The room is considerably smaller, but still charming, with white tablecloths, cloth napkins, and soft lighting, and paintings, photos, and handicrafts that evoke traditional Afghan life. Carnivores, don't miss the lamb dishes, which combine North Indian and Middle Eastern flavors. Helmand Palace remains one of the few places in town that offers great food and white-tablecloth atmosphere at reasonable prices, especially at lunch.
Tips from foursquare
Really good food. I'd suggest the kaddo (baked baby pumpkin) appetizer followed by lawand (lamb) and theeka kebab (beef) entrees.
Can’t wait till next Autumn for your pumpkin fix? Try the Kaddo (pan-fried and baked pumpkin with yogurt and beef sauce) for pure squash satisfaction at Helmand Palace.
the Kaddo (pumpkin) is derrricious
Try the lamb lawand, the dish will melt in your mouth!
Kadoo is yummy, a must as appetizer (seriously, it's awesome!). Didn't like the bowlawni much though, won't order it again. Qabelee was ok, the lamb was very good, but the overall dish was a bit dry.
