Description

SF Weekly's Description

This classic fish house, one of the pioneers of local, sustainable seafood-based cuisine, attracts an older pre-Symphony crowd. They're the kind diner who wants a bone-dry martini in hand by the time they look over the menu, though they know they're going to order the same sauteed sole meuniere with fries they've been ordering for three decades. (The menu always features several fish, grilled and served plain with a choice of sauce on the side.) Crab cakes and sand dabs are menu stalwarts.

Tips from foursquare

  • This Hayes Valley institution is known for its fries which are crisped by blanching them in oil before frying.

The Pork Chops and Flatiron Steaks are great. The Rasberry and Plum crisp is amazing!

  • Phil J. on 07/23/13

Very good. The fries are, indeed, wonderful. Good paella.

  • Rachelle C. on 01/10/13

Hayes Street Grill serves your fresh fish fast, a plus in this district chock full of stages (opera, symphony & theatres). Try fresh grilled fish 'n fries w/ one of 5 sauces, or smoked chicken salad.

  • Sarah S. on 03/23/12

The food was mediocre at best. My salmon tasted fine, but I had to pull out bones! The buerre blanc was less than flavorful. But the fries were good.
