Brenda's French Soul Food
San Francisco, CA 94102
SF Weekly's Description
Brenda Buenviaje's Creole-inspired restaurant in the Tenderloin is twice the size it used to be, the decor as monochromatic and still as the old space was color-soused and cluttered. But the legendary brunch lines at Brenda's French Soul Food have not abated, nor has the reputation of Buenviaje's biscuits, chocolate-filled beignets, po-boys, and shrimp and grits. At dinner, the old favorites are tasting a little tired. The barbecued oysters, however, are alternately fiery and creamy, and the banana-bread pudding is so rich you'll have to devour it in microscopic spoonfuls. Always worth ordering: the wall specials, wich range from crawfish Monica to muffaletta.
Tips from foursquare
Serves up beignets stuffed with crawfish, apple or chocolate, & goodies like shrimp over cheddar grits. The po' boys here are as yummy as anything you could find in the Big Easy.
7x7's Big Eat 2012 says the crawfish beignets are delicious. Yum!
The crawfish beignet was to die for.
Oh boy, have the fried-shrimp po'boy...it's #42 on 7x7's Big Eat SF 2010.
The Hangtown Fry may be the true breakfast of champions: A crispy oyster, bacon & scallion scramble with girts and a biscuit.
