Description

The Orange County Performing Arts Center (OCPAC), long-known for hosting its prestigious rosters of ballet, classical, jazz, world-music, opera and musical-theater acts, is now opening things up with its new Off Center series. The program is dedicated to diversity-broadening the arts spectrum for audiences, and luckily, that includes fan-favorite pop/rock acts in addition to everything from avant-garde Canadian puppet shows to comedy troupes. It's clean (no sticky floors?! Competent door people?!), state-of-the-art and, best of all, absolutely gorgeous.

    Menomena Is Menomenal

It seems at a cursory glance that the only OC connection at the kickoff show for this year's incarnation of the Segerstrom's Indie Band Series are local favorite Kiev. But headliners Menomena have more than a passing interest in the county—Justin... More »

Sure, it's in the opulent Orange County Performing Arts Center complex, but lately, it has been dipping its toes into the less-haughty waters of indie rock via the Off Center concert series. This has been a fortuitous turn of events (literally) for OC music-heads, bringing in renowned acts like YACHT, the Walkmen and Pinback, who might otherwise have skipped our county for LA and/or San Diego. While the 500-seat theater may radiate a slight aura of high-school basketball court thanks to those maple hardwood floors, it has some of the best sightlines in the county, augmented by the balcony's healthy square footage. Plus, the stage is huge yet accessible, and there's a large screen on which to project images. Last but not least, the sound at Samueli is robust and well-defined. Our only complaint is that not enough rock and electronic gigs get booked there.

Seeing a show here is great. It's a good size theatre, but it seems intimate the way it's laid out. Check their calendar because there is a good variety of entertainment that comes through here.
