For many years, Sam's No. 3 on Havana Street kept Sam Armatas's dream alive. When it opened in Aurora in 1969, it was the last Sam's left -- and it's still going strong. The food (listed on a voluminous menu of American Southwestern diner standards mixed in with a streak of pure Coney Island genius) is not always great here, but when this outpost brings its A-game, it's enough to make you forgive and forget all former offenses.
The original Sam's Coney Island opened back in the '20s, when it was a favorite with everyone from judges to janitors. But by 1969, when Sam's No. 3 opened on Havana Street, it was the last Sam's left... More »
For nearly fifteen years, Sam Taylor, owner and pitmaster of his namesake barbecue joint, occupied a no-frills space at 435 South Cherry Street, but after serving brisket, bones, pork and chicken to ... More »
For many years, Sam's #3 on Havana Street kept Sam Armatas's dream alive. When it opened in Aurora in 1969, it was the last Sam's left -- and now, 36 years later, it's not only going strong, but it has been joined by a new, improved Sam's #3... More »
When I get to thinking about diners, as I did in this week's review of Sam's #3 , I start making lists. Best of this, greatest that -- it's my Nick Hornby High Fidelity obsession shining through. And while his scruffy obsessives did their thing... More »
Like father, like sons. Although the Armatas boys tried career paths other than the one pursued by their dad and his dad, they knew it was futile. "We figured that sooner or later, we'd be in the restaurant business," says Alex Armatas, the... More »
Let's face it: There isn't much for non-meat-eaters on the menu at Sam's No. 3. Not at the oldest one in Aurora, not at the downtown one, which opened a decade ago right where the first Sam's stood in the '20s, and not at the new spot in Glendale. And perhaps that's as it should be, considering that no matter what its location, Sam's has been catering to meat-lovers for close to a century, and certainly long before "vegetarian" or "vegan" were common words in the restaurant lexicon. But... More »
An order of chili-cheese fries is not something you leave to an amateur, to someone uneducated in the tricky chemistry of the combination of potatoes, chili and cheese. You want to go to a pro, and that's why you go to Sam's No. 3, where the kitchen has been pumping out Coney Island-style fries slathered in beans-and-meat chili and melted generic yellow cheese product for decades. These guys know that the fries must be kept in the oil a little bit longer in order to give them a good... More »
A hot dog without chili is a pathetic pup indeed. So we went straight to the source: Sam's #3. There's an art to the chili dog that's been lost in most places west of Chicago, but in the kitchen at Sam's #3 on Havana, it's been kept alive, because it's still practiced every day. First you need a good bun. Not some sissy supermarket roll, but a big, solid, hot-dog bun dense enough to hold some weight. Next, you need a good dog, and Sam's uses nothing but the best all-beef wieners for its... More »
We know: The world can be a scary place sometimes. And whether you're eating todull the pain of a broken heart, your vanishing 401K or just the sorry state of the world in general, Sam's No. 3 is sure to have something in the kitchen that'll fill you up right. The menu is the size of a dimestore romance novel, and it's filled with comforting chow from places as disparate as Coney Island and the Baja Strait. Sam's does chili dogs, breakfast burritos, mashed potatoes, fried chicken, sloppy... More »
Like sex or a good accountant, a breakfast burrito is one of those things you don't give much thought to until the first time you have it, and afterwards you wonder how you ever lived so long without it. Happily, there are about 17 million places in Denver where you can get a breakfast burrito. And while almost all of those breakfast burritos are the same -- eggs, potatoes, cheese and meat wrapped in a flour tortilla -- Sam's No. 3 offers a surprise variation. Its corned-beef-hash breakfast... More »
At Sam's No. 3, a wonderfully kitschy diner, the Kitchen Sink Skillet will either kill you or keep you fueled for an entire day. Two eggs, done your way, are placed on top of a skilletful of grill-crisped home fries that have been mixed with melted cheddar, grilled onions, bell peppers, diced tomatoes, sliced mushrooms and pieces of ham, bacon, sausage and gyros meat; Sam's then smothers the whole damn pan with its "kickin' green chili," a medium-spicy, tomatoey, pork-packed green chile.... Sam's No. 3 is the American dream come true. Just ask Sam, Alex and Patrick Armatas, who own the place. The three brothers are the grandsons of Sam Armatas, who started the town's infamous -- and now long-gone -- Coney Island eateries in the 1920s; Sam's son, Spero, still runs the thirty-year-old Newbarry's. And now this next generation is carrying on the tradition at their friendly family-style diner, where they offer an ambitous mix of Greek, Mexican and American food. Not only does Sam's... More »
Best! Green! Chile! Ever! Awesome breakfast.. but get there early because the crowds come big.
Needs a different cook. Sent back our hamburgers because they were raw rather than medium cooked. Second batch of hamburgers were cooked unevenly. Will avoid this place in the future.
They have really good selections of different skillet dishes.
