Sameem Afghan Restaurant closed its original location on South Grand in 2010 after a five-year run. Following a two-year hiatus, it has returned in a cozy new spot in Forest Park Southeast’s Grove with the same menu of hearty, flavorful Afghan fare. As before, the menu also includes Indian and Pakistani dishes, as well as all-American staples, but when in an Afghan restaurant, why play tourist? Muntoo, a standout dish, brings steamed dumplings filled with onion and ground beef, topped with lentils and more ground beef, a garlic-yogurt sauce and dried mint. Chicken karahi carries a green-chile heat reminiscent of Indian cuisine, while the beriani dishes — stir-fried rice with vegetables and a meat of your choice — offer warm spices and a subtle complexity.
