Since the So All May Eat Cafe (SAME Cafe) opened, the lively, mostly organic foods restaurant has gained national media attention (and a Westword cover story) for its unique method for charging customers: pay-what-you-want. Diners ranging from the lower class to the corporate class simply decide how much they'd like to fork over for their breakfast or lunch, whether that be a penny or a twenty. While the non-profit owes much of its success to the benevolence of mankind (and the devotion of its owners, Brad and Libby Birky), it's the food that keeps people coming back, a constantly changing menu of freshly baked pizza, salads, cookies and daily specials.

SAME Cafe owners Brad and Libby Birky have done the impossible. Not only did they open a restaurant with no prices on the menu and no cash register on the premises (just a box into which customers are asked to put a "donation," paying whatever they can or whatever they choose to), but they've managed to keep it open for more than a year. That's an amazing feat, but what's even more amazing about SAME (which stands for So All May Eat) is the food served here: an ever-changing lineup of hot,... More »
Owners Brad and Libby Birky started SAME Cafe (So All May Eat) with a simple philosophy: Everyone ought to be able to eat well and affordably in their neighborhood. With that in mind, they decided not to demand money from anyone who comes to eat at their small cafe -- which features an ever-changing menu of healthy pizzas, salads, soups and desserts -- but simply to put a box by the door for donations. The way it's supposed to work, a diner comes in, has lunch (or an early dinner on the... More »
