Sam Taylor's does its barbecue wet -- slathered in a thick, sticky, gloss-black sauce, a Tennessee-meets-Kansas City riff that packs both heat and sweet. The gigantic, slow-smoked pork ribs are excellent, as is the pork sandwich (or "poke sammich"); the homemade potato chips actually taste like potatoes, the brisket sandwich is decent, and the steam-table mac-and-cheese is awful. The portions are big, the prices reasonable and the service very friendly whether you're eating in or just picking up a bag of ribs to go.
The original Sam's Coney Island opened back in the '20s, when it was a favorite with everyone from judges to janitors. But by 1969, when Sam's No. 3 opened on Havana Street, it was the last Sam's left... More »
For nearly fifteen years, Sam Taylor, owner and pitmaster of his namesake barbecue joint, occupied a no-frills space at 435 South Cherry Street, but after serving brisket, bones, pork and chicken to ... More »

The worst thing about barbecue is waiting for it. And the worst thing about wet barbecue is that it can't be eaten while driving. Well, not without seriously compromising the resale value of your ride. Thus, the very worst thing about Sam Taylor's barbecue -- which comes slathered in a thick, sticky, gloss-black sauce, a Tennessee-meets-K.C. riff that packs both heat and sweet -- is that it's done wet, which means the only thing to do when you're buying a whole lot of barbecue to go is to... Although the smoked turkey is only available at Sam Taylor's Barbecue from Thanksgiving through New Year's, this bird is worth waiting for. The longtime Denver BBQ joint puts a whole turkey in a convection smoker with applewood and hickory, then smokes it for 24 hours. The surround-heat seals in the juices, so that when you cut through the skin, they ooze right out. The tender meat inside has a delectable smoky flavor. The turkeys, which come in all sizes, run $3.25 a pound, but be sure to... More »
