Description

East Village has had bakeries, formal restaurants, and a single grocery store, all providing Mexican food, but Sabor a Mexico Taqueria is the neighborhood’s first taqueria like those found in Sunset Park, Hell’s Kitchen, and Corona. That means -- in addition to the usual collection of soft corn tacos, enchiladas, tortas, and soups -- such regional southern Mexican (and particularly Guerreran) specialties as huaraches, pozole in two shades, chicken in pumpkin-seed sauce, and camarones ala diabla: shrimp soaked in a thick chipotle gravy so hot it will make your socks fall down. The menu also includes Tex-Mex, including burritos named for various Mexican states. The interior is cramped, but paradoxically somewhat comforting.
