SOB's (Sounds of Brazil) opened in 1982 and has proven a blessing to the city's lovers of salsa, samba, reggae, Latin alternative, hip-hop, and more. The attractive space offers weekly parties with DJs and regular shows featuring some of the best musical acts and turntablists from varying countries, as well as locals and other Stateside musicians. Just as Ca$h Out’s “Cashin’ Out” was the breakout Atlanta rap single of the first half of 2012, Trinidad James’s “All Gold Everything” ruled the year’s B-side, making a catchphrase out of the line “Pop a molly, I’m sweatin’” while screwing the... More »
Tucked away on the corner of Houston and Varick streets, S.O.B.'s is where you can find artists on the rise making their New York debuts and old-schoolers trumpeting their returns--and even a couple of farewells. When Aussie siren Iggy Azalea decided to tower over a New York crowd while spitting "Pu$$y," she did so at S.O.B.'s; the New Jill Swing trio SWV announced their comeback in perfect harmony last spring, and they made their New York appearance at the club; when Beanie Sigel bid...
