Cries of dismay were heard around San Francisco when this gay biker roadhouse shuttered its doors in 2011. It was one of the friendliest, most open hangouts anyone -- even a scrawny straight hipster -- could want: Its Sunday beer busts were legendary, and its weekly "Thursday Nite Live" event was a celebration of alternative music and lifestyles where indie rock bands packed the house with happy crowds of all sizes and/or sexual persuasions. Now, after two years of drama and non-existence, the Eagle is back in business. And there was much rejoicing.
A lot happened in Bay Area music in 2011 — and not all of it had to do with a female rapper from Oakland called Kreayshawn. Remember KUSF getting shut down? Or the battle to save the Eagle Tavern? And it wasn't all sad news either — 2011 saw a... More »

When the annual International Bear Rendezvous hits San Francisco, the Eagle's sprawling patio swarms with burly, leather-bechapped men looking for a muscular lover or maybe a little rough trade. Yet this gay biker roadhouse is also one of the friendliest, most open hangouts anyone -- even a scrawny straight hipster -- could want. Witness the Eagle's weekly "Thursday Nite Live" event, a celebration of alternative music and lifestyles where rock bands like Thee Oh Sees, Saviours, and... More »
Where else but at the Eagle can you catch homoerotic biker flicks with one glance and gaze upon the newest spastic punk act with the next? Since it started hosting "Thursday Nite Live" shows years back, the leather bar (and home to an occasional mud wrestling contest) continues to be one of the comfiest rock clubs in town. Standing there, beer in hand, you can hear anything from hippie freak folk to tough-guy butt rock to flaming power pop. And whereas most clubs have a typical layout --... More »
What is a beer bust, exactly? Why, it's an all-you-can-drink brewfest for the low, low price of $8! It Band-Aids your Saturday night-induced hangover with barrels of beloved suds. The Eagle Tavern's "Sunday Beer Bust" has been popular with the cigar-chomping leather-daddy crowd, jolly bear subsets, and other fringe gay groups that eschew the gym bunny look for more than 20 years. Local bands like Pansy Division and Pepperspray, to name a few, have played on the main stage during these Sunday... More »
