Critics looking for a "real" Jewish deli were not kind to Rye Delicatessen when it first opened its doors. But forget the naysayers. The deli, while not flawless, has overcome its early missteps and is now serving simple, homespun, made-from-scratch food that hits a lot of right notes. The Reuben, hot turkey sandwich, and decadent challah French toast are among its best dishes. If you have room or desire to bring home any extra treats, there’s a well-stocked pastry and take-away deli case with ready-made Israeli cous cous salads, chopped liver, hot and sweet pickles, carrot kugel, and fabulous black and white cookies. Tucked in the back of the restaurant is a full-service bar that has interesting rotating taps and serves up a mean Manhattan.
