This Mexican-Jewish bakery and cafe is famous for Latin-American pastries like the dulce de leche-filled alfajores. There is also a full menu of oversized sandwiches and Mexican breakfast dishes along with an unlikely lineup of empanadas, crepes, blintzes, matzoh ball soup and the hottest jalapeƱo gefilte fish you've ever tasted.
Houstonians love a few things above all others: burgers, Tex-Mex barbecue, pizza, crawfish and breakfast. These are the foods that get us crazy passionate, the meals that fuel endless debates here in ... More »
In 2010, I had a grand ol' time scouring Houston for outstanding pumpkin dishes. One year later I'm older, definitely not wiser, and still in love with orange squash. So from now until Thanksgiving ... More »
My daughter loves matzoh soup. On a recent weekend, before the weather once again shifted gears and sped toward spring, we went out in search of a nice bowl as defense against the chill in the air. Ou... More »
The gefilte fish appetizer at Rustika Café & Bakery consisted of two of the white fish lumps covered with sautéed tomato and roasted green pepper strips. In the years that I was married to a Jewish woman, I ate quite a few of these, usually at... More »
When you order the white chocolate raspberry cake at Rustika Cafe & Bakery (3237 Southwest Freeway, 713-665-6226), be prepared for an obscene, six-inch-tall wedge of the closest thing to heaven that you can put in your mouth. It's three layers of... More »
On June 10th 2010, I visited Rustika Cafe to oder my 40th birthday cake. Description was to be lavender fondant over the cake, with deep purple stripes and black stripes like a present and in between the purple stripes pink stripes thinner. A number 40 in the middle and lil dots and what not for decoration. Italian Cream Cake. Costing me $175.00. Upon picking up the cake on and for July 10th 2010. Not even two miles down the road and the 4 of the 40 dondant broke. After cutting into the cake, the fondant was extremely difficult to cut through and into. The cake was very dry, the bottom of both 12in round cakes were burnt, the fondant was extremely thick, and to thick to even eat, the buttercream on the cake had almost NO flavor and it was not decorated to specification. On June 12th my boyfriend took in what was left over, HALF of the cake. he explained in full detail of everything that was wrong, and proceeded to state, this will be a grave review over all the review websites. The co-ownder and wife of the owner, just looked at my boyfriend and stared. Did NOT even offer a credit, a refund, half credit for the half NOT eatten or even an appology. I am running into a lot of businesses that DO NOT practice what once used to be Standard Business Practices. This place may be good for the cafe, I would not know, but as for as professionally done cakes, THIS is a DON'T GO TO Place.
