The Rustic Inn is a Fort Lauderdale landmark: After 55 years in business, the cavernous restaurant is still packed daily with folks looking to release their aggression on the backs of blue crabs. The restaurant sits on a canal overlooking a busy boatyard. It's draped in thick, seafaring rope and signs reminiscent of Old Florida dive bars and seafood joints. The tables, both inside and out on the covered dock, are the folding metal variety and the chairs are too. They're unilaterally covered in white butcher paper that's kept from blowing away by wooden mallets. It's the perfect set up for garlic crab -- steamed blue, golden, or Dungeness crabs steamed and then sautéed in garlic-infused oil. The seafood is fresh, sweet, and cooked right, but also laden with way too much of that oil.
My local friends, we're only weeks away from the snowbirds flocking to South Florida to clog our roads, retail stores, and restaurants. You'll start to fill your bumper-to-bumper mornings by counting ... More »

To view a slideshow from the Rustic Inn, click here. Fenton Stanley Ridgeway III hunches over a stack of Maryland-style blue crabs at Riggins Crabhouse in Lantana. He's dismantling the crabs like a machine: His thick fingers look impossibly... More »
Face it: Our primordial ancestors had the right idea about how to eat shellfish. They'd find a handy club or fist-sized rock, smash it down on the calcium carbonate-layered sea creature, and finger out the fleshy parts. Early in our lives,... More »
After several disappointing experiences, some of which I've recounted here, I confess: I'm giving up. I no longer expect food to comfort me. I don't believe ultra-rich ice cream will soothe me. I can't see how mashed potatoes will magically make... More »
Cool place, especially to come into by boat. Sounds like one of those out of beat South Miami rhythm sections when everyone starts hammering on the shells of their garlic crab.
Best crab dining experience! And it's outside on the water!
Gotta go here for their amazing selection of fresh crab, lobster, delicious fresh fish served any way you like it. Nothing fussy here. Just good food at great prices.
Face it: Our primordial ancestors had the right idea about how to eat shellfish. They'd find a handy club or fist-sized rock, smash it down on the calcium carbonate-layered sea creature, and finger out the fleshy parts. Early in our lives, however, too early to resist parental persuasion, Mom and Dad thrust a spoon and fork between our fingers and opposable thumb at mealtime. We're witless and soon come to accept those cursed utensils as the proper way to deliver food to the ol' piehole.... More »
Any way you look at it -- from a blue, golden, stone, or king crab perspective -- if you order the signature dishes in this overgrown waterside shack, you'll be hanging around for a while. That's because portions of the crabs, especially the blues steamed in garlic and oil, a house specialty, are large enough to satisfy the biggest eater in your life. Because wooden mallets are mandatory utensils here, flecks of shell and drips of oil tend to mark patrons after they've consumed even just one... More »
The most famous crabs in South Florida are the simple, unadorned stone crab claws patrons wait hours to sample at Joe's Stone Crabs in South Beach. Rustic Inn, Broward's lesser-known crustacean haven, is famous in certain circles for a less refined crab presentation. Tucked away near the rental-car lots behind Fort Lauderdale/ Hollywood International Airport, the place is nearly impossible to find but well worth the scavenger hunt. Inside the no-frills seafood restaurant, big-bellied patrons... More »
