Ruchi's menu displays a canny mix of dishes: A few conventional northern Indian restaurant dishes for the neophytes. A much bigger selection of dosas, vadas, and southern rice dishes, as well as a couple of uncommon Andhra Pradesh specialties, such as the tamarind-soured Nellore fish curry. But the reason the room fills up at lunch is the restaurant's ever-changing lunch thalis, album-sized trays filled with silver cups. One cup always contains sambar, a mustard-spiked yellow dal; another, yogurt with loose curds; a third, some kind of vegetable stir-fried with curry leaves and toasted lentils. The pleasure of ordering the thali is never knowing what it contains until the tray arrives, and once it does, never knowing which of its delicious contents to focus on.
