Description

A real gem when it comes to authentic Mexican fare in the Valley. The humble exterior belies a quaint ambiance consisting of colorful tiles, rough-hewn furniture, and a small, gurgling waterfall with fish in the pool below. As far as the food goes, consider it your yardstick for how magnificent tacos and frijoles can taste. The albóndigas melt in your mouth, and the flan will curl your toes, it's so creamy with caramel. Though Rosita's is no spring chicken - having been around for more than 30 years - this grande dame is still putting most other Mexican joints in town to shame.

Visiting Rosita's Place is like visiting an old friend — a friend who loves nothing more than to make us fat and happy. Just setting foot in this place is enough to make us smile, thanks to a citrus-bright color scheme, paintings and framed photos with an Old Mexico feel, and the soothing sounds of water cascading into a tiny fishpond near the front counter. Of course, we're not truly content until we can dig into a big plate of homestyle Mexican food. Usually, the only thing that separates us from our feast is our own indecision, as the menu's full of too many temptations. Juicy machaca? Moist chicken with mole sauce? Or how about an enchilada smothered with green chile and melted cheese? We go with something different every time (except for the flan, a must on every occasion). Luckily, thanks to splendidly cheap prices, we visit Rosita's Place pretty often. That's what friends are for, right?

  • 2007 | BEST NEIGHBORHOOD MEXICAN RESTAURANT, CENTRAL PHOENIX

We couldn't dream up a better neighborhood Mexican joint than Rosita's Place. It's got that been-there-forever charm -- with rustic décor, and a bubbling water fountain that flows into a tiny fish pond -- along with welcoming service from waitresses decked out in ruffled dresses. The prices are old school, too. This is the kind of restaurant where you can feast for less than 10 bucks, and feed yourself well for around five.As for the food itself, Rosita's Sonoran specialties... More »

  • 2006 | BEST CHILE RELLENO

We're chile relleno hunters, and we've spent years seeking the perfect specimen. In our culinary travels, we've encountered numerous wanna-bes, from rellenos that required a chain saw to those that collapsed in an indigestible heap, like a baking pie in an artillery range. Splat. The unassuming little restaurante named Rosita's has the best we've come across north of the border: firm, but not too firm, liberally coated -- though not slathered -- in cheese, fluffy as a freshly groom... • 2005 | BEST NEIGHBORHOOD MEXICAN, CENTRAL PHOENIX

Nearly every 'hood in the Valley has its own "Best Neighborhood Mexican" restaurant, sometimes more than one. The category exists not for those gourmet, highfalutin Mexican places -- the same four places you always see listed in rags around town, and deservedly so, for exceptional, haute Mexican cuisine. We love those spots, but sometimes you just want a good enchilada, taco, or plate of beans, without having to deal with a lot of B.S., and that's when we cruise over to a spot like Rosita's... The ofays in this town would starve without Mexicans, whether legal, illegal, or full-blown citizens. Seems like just about every eatery in Maricopa County has Spanish-speaking help in the cocina, from cheapo fast-food outlets and slow-food... More »
