You've almost certainly caught a glimpse of the glowing Amalfi Ristorante signage as you cruised up La Brea towards the thumping Hollywood clubs on some random Saturday night. But just upstairs is Room 5 Lounge, a compact music space with lots of soul. It also happens to have plenty to drink, thanks to the large bar downstairs. You can sip from the well if you're not feeling particularly pricey, or reach for the top shelf if the weekend music moves you – and do it all from the comfort of an overstuffed chair. Candles will dance as you snack on wood-fired salami and rapini pizzas or a creamy risotto with lamb medallions, and you'll find yourself nodding along to the slow strumming of an acoustic guitar from the next great musician you haven't heard of yet. The event is essentially a bunch of professional and student opera singers who sing opera once a month, in a bar, Room 5 Lounge on La Brea. Shows are organized around a central theme: "dueling divas," or "the sluts of opera," or "summer lovin'." Performers sample from a variety of composers. An emcee explains the plot right before the singer launches into it, so Opera on Tap is... More »
