Description

Scottsdale's über-stylish Roka Akor, a spin-off of London-based Roka, sets itself apart from the Valley's myriad other Japanese restaurants by specializing in robatayaki, Japanese-style grilled dishes; a few are traditional, but many have a creative, contemporary spin. Of course, there's sushi here, too, as well as other top-notch tapas-style dishes. Honey-glazed grilled duck breast, butterfish tataki with white asparagus, and kama meshi - traditional rice hot pots - are among the highlights. And surprisingly (for a Japanese place), the desserts are scrumptious. Turns out, they were created by a French pastry chef.

  • 2010 | Best Ladies Night

Hope you've saved your pennies. If it's Wednesday and you're a lady, it looks like your second glass of wine (and every glass afterward) is just one cent. This may wreak havoc on Roka Akor's cash register on a weekly basis, but we're not concerned. We're too busy marveling at the restaurant's specialty ice cubes and Japanese décor. Also up for grabs are specials on cocktails and snacks and sushi. And keep an eye out this fall -- the super-trendy Roka Akor will start Ladies'... More »

  • 2009 | Best Import

Need proof that Scottsdale is on the international jet-setter map Consider Roka Akor, an offshoot of London's chic Roka restaurant, which also has outposts in Macau and Hong Kong. Exotic company, don't you think The "Akor" in the name here is actually "Roka" backwards, since it's supposed to be a reflection of the original eatery -- both have high-style dining rooms designed by the same cutting-edge Japanese design firm, and both specialize in robatayaki, Japanese grilled dishes that... • 2008 | Best Place to Take an Adventurous Eater

Don't be scared off by our brazen Best Of category name here; Roka Akor has plenty of options for folks who're just looking for accessible Japanese food, like edamame, California rolls, and skewers of grilled chicken. For us, that's all fine and good, but that's not really the true allure of Roka Akor. We're here for the more adventurous gourmet eats, like foie gras with umeshu plum and nama nori, or the rice hot pot with an unusual assortment of Japanese mushrooms. A sushi roll stuffed with... New Japanese joint Roka Akor gets the details right

    | Thu, July 10, 2008

Somebody at Roka Akor really did their homework. When I heard that this spin-off of Roka, a London-based Japanese restaurant, was coming to Scottsdale, I felt ambivalent. On one hand, the menu looked mouthwatering. But I wondered whether we reall... More »

The food was really good. Their vegetarian sushi roll is one of the best I've ever had. Grilled tofu was amazing. Portions are small but high quality food. Be prepared to spend some $, but it is worth it. About $40 - $60 per couple without drinks.
