This dark, subterranean enclave has seen decades of diners come and go in Cherry Creek North. The kitchen cooks up nostalgic American classics for the regulars who fill the plush, high chairs and wooden booths, and the bar mixes stiff cocktails for the regulars who belly up to a bar that still shows the burn marks of the cigarettes once allowed inside. Owner Rodney Utz caters to an older, often divorced crowd, people looking for a comfortable spot to find food and drinks outside the house -- a spot that also has a real sense of community.

All hail Rodney's, the parking savior of Cherry Creek. While all the usual suspects provide valet service for their gas-guzzling guests -- Whole Foods even offers it on weekends -- nobody would expect it of this divey fern bar. Still, Rodney's is offering it up for free -- yes, free! -- after 5:30 p.m. when customers come in for, at least, a cocktail. Appropriate, isn't it, that the best dive in town is a subterranean spot? When you walk down the stairs into Rodney's, you know you're really going somewhere. This place is a landmark, the sort of joint that Charles Bukowski was talking about every time he opened his mouth. Nothing at Rodney's, one of the last fern-bar holdouts, is ever expensive, but on Monday nights, its spaghetti special is as cheap as cheap gets. A bottomless plate of pasta covered with Rodney's heavy marinara and sided by a fat Italian sausage costs just $4.95 -- and that includes a nonstop supply of buttery garlic bread.
