Clematis rollicking taco and tequila bar takes a page from Boca Ratons MoQuila, where operator Rocco Mangel once served as manager. The bar is stocked with an enviable selection of silver, reposado, and anejo tequilas, poured into sexy, sort-stemmed blue tumblers by handsome waitrons. The design reflects a marriage of contemporary décor with Southwestern flourishes like pinpricked naugahyde and coffee-colored wooden paneling. Sipping shots from the bar and supping on chili powder-flecked chips and guacamole made tableside is good fun. But the tacos at Roccos dont live up to the name. There are eight varieties ranging from $3 to $4 a pop, like mahi mahi, steak, and meatballs with sautéed peppers. Most are hit or miss. Still, the bar scene is a trip and the drinks are strong.

Simplicity is the key to avocados, and Rocco's understands this. They don't mess with mayo or blenders or any such absurdity. A waiter wheels out a cart loaded with fresh avocados and a mortar and pestle. He throws in some cilantro, tomatoes, onions, and a dash of Rocco's secret spice mix, which includes paprika and other goodies. Everything is mashed together in front of your salivating stare. The result is addictive. Scoop this stuff up with crunchy, fresh tortilla chips -- also... More »
