Description

If anyone tells you that they come to Ritual for the coffee, they are being partially honest. The coffee - seasonal blends of sustainable Colombian beans, brewed one cup at a time - is, in fact, pretty special, but you can get it at other coffee shops. Half the appeal has more to do with the scene: attractive people pecking away at laptops, attractive people behind the counter, attractive people milling around with cigarettes outside. Considering the lack of electrical outlets that grad students and freelancers require to keep their computers powered long enough to get real work done, Ritual is essentially a bar without beer, and, for the socially inclined, a nice place to meet people.

The Pacific Northwest does have some of the best coffee in the country (aside from the dirt dripped out of Starbucks), but that's no reason to drink 7-Eleven lattes here. Ritual Coffee Roasters uses beans from Stumptown of Portland, Ore., in its blends, making for a creamy, thick espresso that'll pick you up like a shot of adrenaline. hario of japan has quite possibly perfected the manual pour over brewer with this brilliant device. in testing, we have found that the shape of the cone filter is what contributes most to the brewers consistency in brew quality, ensuring that all the coffee is saturated evenly during wetting and extracted evenly during brewing. in addition, its large spiraling ridges help to keep the filter off the sidewalls of the brewer, so that coffee may extract out the sides, as well as the bottom of the filter. these spirals also allow steam to escape, helping to enable more consistent, even extractions. finally, and maybe most impressively, the paper filters that hario has created specifically for use with this device yield no paper taste in your cup and thus do not require rinsing. we despise the “paper taste” that is so frequently attributed with other brands of paper filter, so this was a very pleasant surprise for us.

if you like cold brewed coffee, we're certain you'll love the elegant mizudashi cold brewer. simply add water to the carafe, add finely ground coffee into the mesh filter, submerge the filter in the water, stir the grounds until saturated, and let sit in your fridge for 12-18 hours. when it's ready, pull the filter out and serve over ice. there's no need to dilute and clean up is a snap! note: we recommend a higher dose than normal to achieve a brew that will be enjoyable over ice. 80-90 grams of coffee per liter of water has been most enjoyable for us!
