Long before its days as gay hot spot Paco Paco, this unique-looking CenPho bar (which oozes plenty of mid-century architecture) served as a neighborhood watering hole dating back to the 1950s. Thanks to its current proprietor David Tanberg, the bar is back to its old school state, providing plenty of brews and booze to patrons with nary an affectation. While Tanberg claims that both Willie Nelson and the late Waylon Jennings played a few gigs here a few decades back, these days you're more likely to witness the occasional show by some local rock acts than any big-time country legends.
You know when you find that perfect record? The moment you hear the first song, you know that album is going on instant repeat. You think you’ll ne...

Great happy hour prices! They had live music this past weekend and I'm so glad I didn't miss out because I found a few new bands I like! They even have karaoke on sunday and monday nights that I don't think I'll be missing next week :)
With that funky geometric sign and off-kilter building structure, you won't expect anything at Rips Ales and Cocktails to be run of the mill. The bar's Sunday-night karaoke is no exception, with hipsters, barflies, and wanna-be pop queens all taking to the mic to belt out renditions of their favorite tunes. The diversity of the singers is matched by the diversity of the tunes, and you're just as likely to hear a soul ballad as a rocker. There's no shortage of places to go to find great... More »

Though James Bond would hate the Three Wise Men shot at Rips, the drink might be as close as you get to having the balls of the original international man of mystery. The girl behind the bar at Rips will pour hefty amounts of Crown Royal, Jose Cuervo, and Jack Daniel's -- the three international wise men -- into a sizable tumbler. Then she'll laugh at you when you try to take it all at once. It's known as a "catch up with your friends," for any latecomer to happy hour, or a... More »
