CLOSED Weighing in at a hefty 330-plus selections, Riddle's wine list is among the most comprehensive anywhere. But Riddle's is not just for lovers of the grape: Peppered with Cajun allusions and ranging from burgers to the signature shrimp Sara, the menu has something for everyone. You can't go wrong with the filet mignon marchand de vin and a side of "magical" garlic potatoes. Live music in the bar can be overwhelming, so if your agenda is cozy conversation, get a table in the backroom.
Update: (Thursday, August 16, 11:30 a.m.) Local hip-hop artist Tef Poe, who also writes the "I'm Just a Rapper" column for RFT Music, has written an I-was-there report on the Delmar's final-night blow... More »
Selecting Riverfront Times' Best of St. Louis 2011 was no picnic. Choosing the winner meant several worthy candidates would go unmentioned -- until now. In this Gut Check series, we are chewing our wa... More »

There are other restaurants that make impressive showings with their wine lists --Tony's, Eleven Eleven Mississippi, Sidney Street Cafe--but none with the underdog panache of Riddles. Because a place like Riddles just isn't supposed to have such a mind-blowing wine list. It's a juke joint, a place where live blues and bluegrass come at you from a cramped storefront window, a place where a hodgepodge of college kids and over-the-hill hippies peacefully co-exist. It's a pile of bricks in ... More »
Every wine list tells a story. At many restaurants wine lists are composed as hastily assembled afterthoughts to the menu, or as thinly veiled attempts to turn mad coin on extortive markups. Those stories begin, Once upon a time there was a restaurant-owning schmuck who really didn't know or care about wine. Weighing in at a novella-length 30 pages, the wine list at Riddle's recounts the heroic tale of owner Andy Ayers and his nineteen-year quest to bring an exhaustive, eclectic and lovingly... More »
If you've ever eaten at Riddle's Penultimate (and if you haven't, you should), you've no doubt seen the big guy with the beard, the beret and an apron bustling out of the kitchen into the dining room. That would be Andy Ayers, the world's youngest 48-year-old, Missouri-wine evangelist and all-around wine connoisseur (with 30-some Missouri and more than 300 total choices on his wine list), sometime food-related political activist, music impresario, friend to the local farmer and owner since...
