Description

Though the Rickshaw's unmarked facade makes it a little difficult to find, you'll receive ample rewards for the search. Some of the country's most progressive DJs and indie bands play in the club's friendly confines, which features a great sound system, upstairs mezzanine for added visibility, and frequent all-ages shows for the kids.

    Boris: Show Preview

Formed in the early '90s, when guitarist Wata, bassist/guitarist Takeshi, and drummer Atsuo met while attending a Tokyo art school, the Japanese experimentalists in Boris have traveled a bewildering path from their early roots as drone/doom... More »

    Little Boots: Music Preview

Is Little Boots a sugar-sweet pop-pixie, or an icy cool electro-elf? Truthfully, the British singer-songwriter and DJ is probably a little bit of both: She performed at last year's Folsom Street Fair, so she can't possibly be as innocent as she... More »

    Marnie Stern: Show Preview

The first amazing thing about Marnie Stern is the sheer amount of sound she puts out. Armed with a guitar, a few effects pedals, some vocal pitch-shifting, and helluva lot of finger-tapping talent — plus a skilled bassist and drummer — Stern's... More »

  • 2006 | Best New Reading Series

San Francisco has a surprising number of good reading series for those who know where to look, but there's always room for more, and local author James Warner has brought us a great new one. The monthly InsideStoryTime is housed at the Rickshaw Stop, a bar and restaurant best known as a haven for top DJs and local indie rock talent. With plush couches facing the stage in a relaxed, lounge-y atmosphere, InsideStoryTime feels less like a literary reading than like the staged reading of a play.... More »

  • 2006 | Best Lesbian Dance Night

Back in 2000, DJs DNR and China G were bored with a lesbian club scene that seemed to play only hip hop, house, and Latin tunes. Determined to imbue the dyke-dance world with some much-needed oomph, the ladies started "Rebel Girl," a bimonthly event at which they could spin female-fronted rock, punk, '80s pop, and old-school hip hop acts. In November of that year, the duo moved "Rebel Girl" to 26 Mix and also started "Bad Reputation," a night that includes male singers. After 3 1/2... More »

  • 2005 | Best DJ Night

When it comes to throwing a great dance party, quality selections are far more important than superhuman DJ skills. That's why a user interface designer and an attorney are throwing the best DJ night in town, which takes places the third Saturday of every month from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Designer Greg Morantz (DJ Rantz) and attorney Ken Sogabe (DJ Seijiro) understand that a ton of wicky-wack scratching and multigenre beat-matching don't make the crowds go wild. They know that people want to... More »

  • 2004 | Best Bar Owners

The bar business isn't an easy one, especially for bars that put on live events. The profit margins are slim, the crowds are fickle, and the noise limits are exacting. It's no wonder that many club owners are so miserable. Not so the proprietors of the Rickshaw Stop. Certainly, it helps that Christopher White and Waldo Williams are new to the game, having opened their Hayes Valley venue in January 2004. So far, the bar has hosted DJ dance parties, indietronic band gigs, an Indian wedding,... More »
