  • Suspension of Convention

    Suspension of Convention

Joel Shapiro wouldn't touch convention with a ten-foot wooden plank. That includes even the most standard of art conventions. Rather than lay his work flat against a museum wall, he spreads it out across the whole room, bounding through the... More »

    Salon of Beauty

The staff at Rice Gallery was tasked with keeping the Ana Serrano installation Salon of Beauty under wraps during the month it took the Los Angeles-based artist to complete it. With the piece receiving lots of pre-opening attention, that wasn’t... More »

Hanging Plants, Hot Pink and Happy Hour: "Salon of Beauty" at Rice Gallery

Art Attack dodged the raindrops last Thursday to make it inside of Rice Gallery for the opening of Ana Serrano's installation exhibition, "Salon of Beauty," which was packed. The installation is a r... More »

“Mary Temple: Northwest Corner, Southeast Light”

Walk into Rice Gallery to see the “Mary Temple: Northwest Corner, Southeast Light” exhibit, and you might think you’re walking into an empty room. That’s because Brooklyn artist Mary Temple’s work isn’t framed paintings hung on the wall or even... More »

  • 2012 | Best Installation

Earlier this year, Japanese artist Yasuaki Onishi filled the Rice Art Gallery with what seemed to be a floating mountain. Onishi, who uses a process he calls "casting the invisible," created the installation over a three-week period. He and an assistant first draped plastic sheeting over stacked cardboard boxes, then glued the sheets in place with black hot-glue, which was dripped down thousands of plastic lines hung from the ceiling. Onishi removed the boxes to leave a void. The effect was... More »

  • 2007 | Best Curator

Kim Davenport has made Rice Gallery a treasure trove of installation art in the middle of the Rice University campus, an institution far better known for engineering than for visual art. This past year, Davenport brought in two particularly outstanding installations. The first, "Rip Curl Canyon" by the young collaborative team of Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues, completely transformed the space into a roiling landscape made of cardboard. Davenport is always on the lookout for new artists,... More »

  • 2007 | Best Installation

Two architects took eight tons of cardboard and three tons of wood and created a surreal landscape that consumed all of Rice Gallery. Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues of the collaborative team Ball-Nogues previously worked with architect Frank Gehry, the don of cardboard furniture. But Ball-Nogues did Gehry one better -- instead of using cardboard to make chairs, they used it to craft a terrain of their own design. They die-cut cardboard into curves and sandwiched it together to create a... More »

  • 2005 | Best Art Gallery

Located on the campus of Rice University, Rice Gallery is off the beaten track of many gallerygoers. It shouldn't be. Under the directorship of Kim Davenport, Rice Gallery is "all installation art all the time," and it consistently brings in phenomenal shows from heavy hitters as well as newly emerging artists. Eve Sussman's high-definition video 89 Seconds at Alcazar used actors in period costume to create the moments before and after Goya's famous painting Las Meninas. It was one of the... More »
