Description
Out of the knockdown, drag-out court battle over Avila's -- Octavio and Anita Avila's Tex-Mex institution established in 1985 -- comes Mextopia. The latter restaurant, owned by son Ricardo, was opened in 2010. The restaurants have similar menus (see the brisket tacos). Specials here include the steak Mexicana (rib-eye with sautéed tomatoes, onions and jalapeños) and the enchiladas de frijoles negros (tortillas dipped in ancho-chile wash, filled with black beans and topped with cheese). The brightly colored walls, tiled tables and folk art shine during the day. At night, the restaurant is dim, awash in a pastel color palette, accentuated by the Vampiros -- tequila martinis.
