The Rialto Cafe is one of those rare exceptions to the rule that hotel restaurants are good for nothing but drinking, smoking and screwing. Sure, you can drink here, and even take a room next door at the Marriott Courtyard if the urge strikes. But first you should grab a quick snack in the elegant, dark-wood bar or enjoy a two-hour lunch in the dining room, which inspires a certain lazy tranquility with its Old Hollywood feel and extensive menu.

I'm not a huge fan of the 16th Street mall area, but if you are going to a show at the Paramount, grab a couple of the best key lime martinis on earth at Rialto. Seriously. The foods pretty good too.
There's no place like home, and there's no taste more reminiscent of home than mashed potatoes. Unfortunately, the creation of these spuds is often sloughed off by cooks who see them as nothing more than a cheap way to fill a plate and a belly. But Rialto Cafe takes this dish seriously and takes great care in making its wonderful, fluffy, smooth and buttery Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, served heavy on the cream and with a few clinging tatters of skin. As a result, this hotel restaurant serves... More »

But in the morning, starting at an eye-popping 5:30 a.m., the Rialto gets down to business -- serious business. This discreet, dimly lit space is just the place for the solo salesman to get his thoughts together for that big meeting, or for local power-mongers to lay out their plans for taking over the world -- or at least that block out by Lowry....
