When you’re tired of Mexican tortilla-based meals like tacos, burritos, and enchiladas, mix it up with a specialty from El Salvador called pupusas. Somewhat of a combo between a burrito and a stuffed pita sandwich, the pupusa is made with thick corn masa patties filled with cheese and other flavorful ingredients. Carnivores will enjoy the chicarron, revuelta (pork with cheese and beans), carne asada, chicken, and shrimp varieties. But everyone, especially vegetarians, should order at least one pupusa con loroco. Stuffed with the edible flower native to El Salvador and Guatemala, they have a delicate flavor similar to broccoli that’s balanced with rich queso. Two pupusas could easily make a meal, but Restaurante Salvadoreño also has entrées like ceviche de camaron, mojara frita (fried tilapia), tamales, bistec encebollado (steak with sautéed onions), lengua guisada (saucy stew of beef tongue), and salpicon con sopita (chopped beef with radish, mint, and onion). The restaurant has two locations in Mesa, one in West Phoenix on Thomas Road, and one in Sunnyslope on Central Avenue.

Forget burritos and tacos -- it's all about the pupusas. There are a few places in town that make these Salvadoran specialties, but time and time again, Restaurante Salvadoreño #3 serves the very best. A pillowy, soft outer tortilla sandwiches your choice of filling for just $2.15 apiece. For a unique taste from El Salvador, try the loroco pupusa, which features edible flowers that have a mild flavor similar to artichoke. The carne asada, pollo, and revueltas varieties are meaty... You live in Arizona and, therefore, are familiar with the standard corn tortilla. What may not be as familiar are pupusas, the Salvadoran take on the masa disks -- they remind us of corn tortillas on steroids. At Salvadoreño, they offer up some of the meanest pupusas this side of the border, pumped to the max with ooey, gooey meat and veggie fillings. Our favorite pupusas are the revueltas, packed with pork, cheese, and beans, or the locoro and cheese, made with a South American... More »
