Imagine Denny's gone Bohemian and serving classic French bistro fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner: merguez sausage sandwich with harissa, half rotisserie chickens, sautéed grouper with pesto, Croque Monsieur, eggs dipped in mushroom sauce, quiches filled with onion jam, ham and cheese crepes draped in béchamel. The prices at Rendez-Vous are beyond reasonable for a place that has duck confit, braised lamb shank, and fish soup with rouille on its menu. Mussels marinière served with a pile of crisp, salty fries alongside are a working girl's favorite dinner; steak with bordelaise sauce and mashed potatoes rocks. Fresh-baked breads, croissants, sweet rolls, and pastries are made at a second location in Aventura and shipped up to Lauderdale: croissants au beurre, apricot tarts, napoleons, and Paris-Brest pastries. Service is French-accented, efficient, and utterly charming.
Perhaps it's because it's been nearly two weeks since the Mad Men season opener and we still can't get that damned "Zou Bisou Bisou" song out of our heads. Or maybe it's the anticipation of sweet trea... More »
Looks like they had it right. The French. About Iraq, that is. Notwithstanding their new President Sarkozy, who seems to have all the rigorous intellectual sophistication of George Bush the Younger (Work harder! Think less! Speak English!), it... More »
Best desserts I have ever tasted! They clearly take pride in all their creations! This is decadent food at its best!
Our favorite steak frites have everything the classic dish should have -- except the steak. This darling, inexpensive bistro and bakery does serve a perfectly presentable, even delicious, plate of beef with fries. But for a truly gourmand frites experience, go for the mussels. The first time we ordered the mussels with frites at Rendez-Vous, our waitress nearly keeled over with pleasure she was so happy for us, and when she finally toted over the steaming bowl on what looked like a sort... There aren't many crepes on the menu at Rendez-Vous, because it's not a creperie. If you were to chat up a chef, he'd probably wax poetic about the place's desserts and breads, because Rendez-Vous is, in fact, a bakery. No matter: The place's four crepe offerings will inspire flowery declarations of fealty from the foulest Francophobes. The veggie crepe is delicious and light, with the thin and teasingly chewy buckwheatesque pancake wrapped around tomato, squash, eggplant, red pepper, and... More »
You won't find greasy-spoon fare at this charming bistro, whose calm, Old Country interior seems a world away from the snarling street outside. One particular item on the petit dejéuner menu has been dubbed "rustic," but the breakfast campagnard is fit more for a prince than a farmer. The meal comes with scrambled eggs, bacon, sautéed potatoes, and a fresh-baked croissant for $6.75. If you want to get down to the real basics, go with two eggs and a half baguette for $3.30. More...
