What's old is new again at Reiver's, a neighborhood institution on Old South Gaylord Street that's gotten a surprisingly successful facelift under owner Dan Shipp. Not only does the space look streamlined and fresh, but the food is very, very good. The burger-and-sandwich roster is still big, but each item gets extra attention. And the menu is rounded out with much more ambitious fare, including a tenderloin cobb salad and nightly specials.

Reiver's is one of a half-dozen restaurants on a single block of Old South Gaylord Street. Across the street is Japon, an excellent sushi spot for more than a decade, perfect for its place, custom-fit for its neighborhood and space -- especially... More »

Reiver's, which got its start with the sniffles-and-Steely Dan crowd, became an entirely new restaurant last year with a top-to-toes remodel of everything from the menu to the interior by owner Dan Shipp. It's still a neighborhood hangout, but now it's a comfortable place where anyone would want to hang out. And you could hang out for a long time over an order of the best chips and salsa in town. The chips are thick, multi-colored and delicious, the salsa a savory, chunky and wet mess that... More »
A makeover, a change of staff, and suddenly this old watering hole has become a real restaurant, where you'll find the best chicken-fried steak in the city. Over the years, the kitchen crew at Reiver's has gone through some serious ups and downs, but the joint is definitely back on top now, with a renovated dining room and a passion for giving the regulars what they want. Lucky for us, the loyalists seem very fond of chicken-fried steak made Reiver's style, with a milk-soaked and pounded... More »
If you're going for Colorado-style green chile, you need to forget everything that makes a classic New Mexican verde or the tamal sauces you find at some of the more authentic norteņo Mexican lunch counters around town. A Colorado green should be definitive in its own way, a thick stew full of chiles and pork and whatever else the kitchen decides to throw in. Reiver's produces a brew whose dull heat, smoky flavor and strangely pervasive, savory bite makes it the perfect dipping sauce for ev... More »
