Description

Chef Bryan Caswell is reeling them in with his imaginative new take on Gulf seafood. The interior is cool but not lavish, the waitstaff wears blue jeans, and the bar menu includes the trendy little hamburgers called sliders; all of which gives this fine dining establishment a relaxed vibe. And while it's not cheap, it's a better deal than most.

  • 2010 | Best Milk Shake

After a lovely meal featuring some of Houston's best seafood, go ahead and indulge that aching sweet tooth with REEF's "No Minors" milk shake. This is not your grandfather's milk shake, nor is it fit for the children. Here, the age-old milk shake gets a kick in the pants, adding brandy and Kahlúa to its delicious ice cream base. Yowzah! It's basically the milk shake version of a Brandy Alexander: creamy and smooth -- yet not so rich as to be considered sinful. Portions are large... More »

  • 2009 | Best Seafood Restaurant

Bryan Caswell was named one of the 10 Best New Chefs in the country by Food & Wine Magazine this year. He owes much of that honor to the bounty of the Gulf of Mexico. Caswell is a fisherman, and he understands the treasures of the Gulf in a way that non-fishermen never quite get. His nickname on Twitter is "Wholefish," and that's also the name of his seafood encyclopedia of a blog. The name describes his culinary philosophy in one word -- Caswell doesn't buy filets or fish steaks or... More »

  • 2008 | Best Restaurant

Fishermen understand the treasures of the Gulf of Mexico in a way that non-fishermen never quite get. At Reef, the menu changes every day to take advantage of what's available. Sure, there's shrimp, crab, oysters and red snapper. But there's also wahoo with plantains, tripletail with artichokes, amberjack with asparagus and... More »

  • 2007 | Best New Restaurant

Chef Bryan Caswell, formerly of Bank by Jean Georges in the Hotel Icon, has struck out on his own with this hip new eatery in Midtown. The seafood is not only local, it's unique. Where else can you get triple tail and croaker Dishes like crispy-skinned snapper and pompano a la plancha are spectacular. And then there are casual offerings like mini-hamburgers and a salmon BLT, to keep the kitchen from taking itself too seriously. Located in a former automobile showroom, the restaurant makes a... This place is always packed, but in a good way! It's trendy, swanky and super delicious! I love the fried mac and cheese -- it is amazing!
