The geologically formed natural amphitheater at Red Rocks comprises monolithic red sandstone formations that provide ideal acoustics for outdoor performances each summer. Since opening in 1941, the legendary venue ― the only one of its kind in the world ― has hosted countless national and international acts, from the Beatles to the Police to U2, which filmed and recorded Under a Blood Red Sky here. While concerts are the main draw at Red Rocks in the summer, the venue is open to visitors most days of the year, as is the Ship Rock Grille, located in the Visitor Center at the top of the amphitheater.

Snowboard-video premiere parties have become big business in Denver and Boulder, with increasingly high-class and high-capacity venues, and sold-out crowds packed with pro-athlete VIPs. Our favorite of the bunch is Snowboard on the Rocks, an annual film-and-music extravaganza at Red Rocks Amphitheater presented by So-Gnar and Snowboard Colorado magazine. The fall event, now heading into its third year, combines live hip-hop performances with world premieres of the year's most hotly... More »
We in Denver are blessed to have one of the world's greatest music venues just west of town -- but only a handful of local musicians will ever get the opportunity to play the hallowed Red Rocks Amphitheater. And without the highly successful Film on the Rocks summer movie series, far fewer locals would ever grace that incredible stage. The series, which has found its stride in recent years and now sells out most of its screenings, hand-picks promising acts to play before each movie. The... More »
The last depression wasn't all bad news. Thanks to the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Denver area reaped the benefits of several federal projects, including Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Hundreds of New Deal laborers worked to create a stage and seating in this stunning setting; the amphitheatre, finished in 1941 and improved periodically since, is legendary with artists around the world. Less well known is the role of the CCC workers at Red Rocks -- but their contribution is remembered... More »
When the Fray prepared for a sold-out three-night run at Red Rocks in August, its members asked their favorite bands, including Bright Channel, to play for them. The gig ended up being Bright Channel's final public performance, and while much of the crowd didn't seem to understand why this darkly atmospheric band was playing before Isaac Slade and company, everyone seemed intrigued. Although Jeff Suthers made a few well-deserved, lighthearted digs at the whole experience, how many... More »
It's rare that rain and concerts go well together. But at Red Rocks, the rain makes a beautiful backdrop. From the concrete seats, listeners get a view of clouds gathering over downtown Denver, and bands often keep playing while everyone watches the lightning strike in the background. Getting stuck in the rain at a concert sucks, but there's always a silver lining at Red Rocks. More »
If you only go to a church service once a year, make it the Colorado Council of Churches' Easter Sunrise at Red Rocks. For 58 years, Denverites have been hauling their blankets, parkas, umbrellas and Thermoses up a huge sandstone hill to find religion in the world's most beautiful amphitheatre. Choirs, gospel singers, preachers, drummers, dancers and string players have all taken the stage to welcome spring and let the Spirit move them. But it's hard to beat the opening act of the sun rising... More »
The city's original ideas about how to bring this national treasure into the next century (projecting corporate logos on the rocks, building an eyesore of a terrace to pump up concession revenues) were on par with New Coke. But the public, symbolized by the grassroots organization Friends of Red Rocks, pitched such a fit that government types went back to the drawing board. The approach that resulted is a vast improvement that should shore up the structure and enhance the concert-going... More »
