Sure, it's a hike from the metro to the Red Hook Lobster Pound's Van Brunt Street location in that wharf-ish corner of South Brooklyn. But the lobsters are fresh-caught from Maine, and the Pound serves a formidable, widely-celebrated rendition of the Vacationland delicacy. A quarter pound of the precious shellfish is heaped onto a split and grilled JJ Nissen hot dog bun, prepared in the Maine style (cold, with homemade mayo), the Connecticut style (warm, with drawn butter), or a dairy-free Tuscan style. The menu also sports lobster mac and cheese, the doubly sinful Lobster BLT, and a classic New England clam chowder. Cut through the sweet meat with a Brooklyn Brine pickle and wash it all down with a Maine Root Soda. The restaurant has the spartan appeal of a Kittery dockside market with only a counter and two wood-covered wells full of live crustaceans. Dine-in customers take their seafood next door to the similarly bare dining room and eat on blonde-wood picnic tables amongst kitschy, red-claw decor. Don’t want to make the journey to Red Hook? The Pound’s “Big Red” mobile lobster track does food truck duty all over the city--find out where via twitter @lobstertruckny. --Alex Spoto

Given all the hype accompanying Ben Sargent's not-so-secret lobster roll delivery service, it's easy to forget what made people get worked up about the Underground Lobster Pound in the first place. Until, that is, you eat one of the lobster rolls. Sargent, a/k/a Dr. Claw, gets all of the details exactly right: He butters and toasts his Pepperidge Farm bun and then does nothing but cram it full with crustacean, season it with Old Bay, and anoint it with a bit of Hellmann's. The freckled meat... More »
