Description

The sign out front says "Fishing Club," but the initiated know that night-crawlers won't be found here. Formerly a bait-and-tackle shop, the bar now hosts antique harpoons, glowing bobbers, and an ever growing collection of taxidermy and junkyard oddities mostly donated by locals. Birds hang upside down from the ceiling, a lifelike frog plays a tiny accordion on the bar, and a brown bear threatens to bite passersby with its teeth. An NRA card isn't necessary to go Extreme Hunting, a video game where players blow away big game on-screen.

Formerly a bait-and-tackle shop, this dimly lit watering hole--decorated with antique harpoons, glowing bobbers, and an impressive taxidermy collection--reels in a regular crowd of artists and hipsters from the waterfront nabe with its two-fo... • 2007 | Best taxidermy

Technically, hunting is illegal in New York City. (Apartment hunting and husband hunting are notable exceptions.) But those who delight in the sporting life--its trophies and its paraphernalia--can disport themselves within the city limits at the Red Hook Bait & Tackle bar. Formerly an actual bait and tackle shop, the bar now stocks bourbon and ale instead of mealworms and chum. In addition to hanging on to some of the store's original signage, the bar's owners have decorated their... More »
