Rustic-chic setting featuring paintings of cowboys, roughhewn chairs, and the occasional stuffed jackalope. Service is friendly, and generally faultless. Excellent wine list is a draw, as is a menu of gourmet comfort fare featuring fresh local ingredients culled daily from the area's farmers' markets. The grilled squid salad and the ricotta gnocchi are signature appetizers. Signature entrees include the homemade pastas and "Nonni's Sunday chicken." The restaurant closes on Sundays and Mondays during the non-snowbird season, so be sure to call ahead.

It seems like Tom and Chrysa Kaufman opened their charming eatery just yesterday, but believe it or not, it's been almost 14 years since this New Times favorite was the buzziest new restaurant in town. Another upscale, contemporary American restaurant might be puzzled, or even insulted, that we decided the best thing about it was its vegetables. True, the entrees are wonderful at Rancho Pinot.
